On February 1, freeride mountain bike rider Kelly McGarry sadly passed away in Queenstown, New Zealand. It is understood he suffered from a heart attack while riding on the Fernhill Loop, a bike trail located on the slopes above Queenstown, while filming a video with two German companions.
The New Zealand native was well known for his outstanding achievements in mountain biking and track building. He was the only New Zealander ranked in the world’s top 20 for slopestyle, and his innovation on a bike and larger-than-life character earned McGarry the Best Trick award at the Red Bull Rampage 2013 as well as the People’s Choice Award, as voted by his many fans.
The news comes as a huge shock to the mountain bike community and everyone who knew him. He will be remembered around the world for his enthusiastic and friendly personality. His bike sponsor YT posted a statement on their website saying the company was deeply saddened and shocked by the death of ‘a truly unique character’.
