“The most stylish surfer ever”. Waterman of the Year. Mr Pipeline. Founder of Lightning Bolt Surfboards. Subotai from Conan The Barbarian.
Gerry Lopez is synonymous with class in surfing and has aged like a fine, fine wine. Here’s a still from the 1970s:
Patagonia and Gerry Lopez‘ beautiful documentary, The More Things Change, featuring surfing by Gerry Lopez, Rob Machado, Dave Rastovich and Rizal Tandjung uses Uluwatu – and surfing – as a metaphor for change; and highlights the efforts being taken to preserve the surf mecca Lopez first pioneered in the 1970s: Bali.
Starting with a long talk-story, Lopez covers early days of exploration, the notorious Boyum brothers as well as some of the top talents in the surfing world at the time. The More Things Change moves on to the current state of the region, and the efforts being taken to keep Uluwatu and the surrounding area as pristine and desirable as it was when Lopez and friends first laid eyes on it.
