Pipeline, North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii Friday December 19 2014) Gabriel Medina (BRA) 2014 World Surfing Champion. - The final stop of the 2014  World Championship Tour, the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, was  ccompleted today in NW double overhead surf.  Gabriel Medina (BRA) became the first ever Brazilian World Champion after both rival contenders , Kelly Slater (USA) and Mick Fanning (AUS) were eliminated from the contest. Medina went onto finish 2nd overall behind Julian Wilson (AUS).  In the overlapping heat format Wilson surf three consequent heats and still had enough entry to take out the 30 minute final. By winning the final Wilson also won the covered Vans Triple Crown of Surfing for best overall performance through the whole Triple Crown. The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons will determine this year’s world surfing champion as well as those who qualify for the elite tour in 2015. As the third and final stop on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Series  the event will also determine the winner of the revered three-event leg.  Photo: joliphotos.com
