Red Bull Rampage has to be one of the gnarliest events in the extreme sports world. Starting in 2001 it was cancelled in 2004 due to the insane risk to competitors. Thankfully, it returned in 2008, and has been gaining more and more attention ever since. With $8000 going to the winner in 2001, there is now a total prize pool of $100000.
Runs are judged similarly to Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding, based on the choice lines down the course, their technical ability and the complexity of tricks. Initially competitors weren’t focusing on tricks, as the terrain was challenging enough. With the development of the sport, riders eventually added kickers to the cliff drops and huge Canyon Gaps were incorporated.
Here’s a look at some of the not so successful runs. How these guys walk away from such wipeouts I have no idea.
