There’s so much more to Mick Fanning than a world champion surfer and shark survivor. He’s a top human being who, between his busy schedule, makes time to hang out with his best mate, Barney Miller.
Like Mick, Barney was an aspiring professional surfer when he was younger, until a severe road accident left him a quadriplegic when he was 20. Despite his positivity, the reality of not being able to walk or surf resulted in tough times for Barney. But ten years ago Barney and Mick met, and ever since they’ve helped and inspired each other to overcome personal challenges. These days Mick takes Barney surfing and is also literally helping him get back on his feet, and Barney is also helping Mick recover from the personal and professional traumas he has endured in the past 12 months.

Barney & Kate are ambassadors of Wings for Life World Run, a global running event whose goal is to find a cure for spinal cord injury. It’s a run with a difference – there’s no finish line and everyone around the world in 34 cities starts at exactly the same time on 8 May 2016. Australia’s local event is in Melbourne (Hawthorn East) at 9pm. Last year, more than 100,000 people registered for the run.
